That’s according to Miguel Angel Isidro, Mexican counsel in
Laredo, Texas. In remarks to the Mexican press, Isidro said 60
migrants have perished in the zone surrounding Laredo and its sister
city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, so far this year.

Of the 60 deaths, 34 were registered on the U.S. side of the border
and 26 on the Mexican side. According to Isidro, all the deaths in
Mexico were due to drownings in the Rio Grande. The deceased persons
recovered in the U.S. succumbed mainly to dehydration, though some
drowned in the river or were killed in vehicular accidents, he said.

“The (death toll) is higher than last year’s, when 52 dead migrants
were registered, according to Mexican consular sources and reports
from the authorities in Nuevo Laredo” Isidro said. “Of those deaths,
30 happened in the desert of Laredo, Texas, and 22 on the Mexican side
of the Rio Grande.”

The Mexican diplomatic official attributed the increase in migrant
deaths to the tightening of U.S. border security across from
once-popular crossings between the Mexican state of Coahuila and the
highway that connects to the metropolitan center of Monterrey, Nuevo
Leon. The blocked access, Isidro said, has forced migrants to attempt
dangerous crossings in areas with extremely high temperatures or
treacherous waters. The Mexican consulate, he added, has issued
warnings advising of the dangers in crossing the territory.

Sources: El Diario de Juarez/Notimex, September 10, 2012.
Spray Booth Gallery 130 West 18th Street Inside Volker Bicycles Kansas City
New World Border: Artists Respond to the U.S./Mexico Border Wall
August 5-August 27, 2011

Building a wall not only demarcates a boundary, but it separates and unites simultaneously. A wall is a symbolic rift that reflects a human tendency to define difference, demarcate geography and property. Border walls shore up nationalist identities with erected structures, rhetoric and policies intended to define an exclusive culture of “us”. The people residing on the other side of this shared boundary often become a scapegoat for fears, frustrations, and insecurities. Such is the case with the construction of the U.S./Mexico border wall. It is like a knife severing interconnected neighbors, wildlife, indigenous peoples, and families. The wall inflames hatred and contributes to an atmosphere of vigilantism and oppression. While the US walls off its territory in the name of “security” what is it sacrificing? Similar to other collaborative artistic response efforts like the Art of Democracy and the work of Just Seeds collaborative, this show utilizes the print medium to disseminate various viewpoints about events ongoing. Prints historically have served as a means for disseminating artists’ reactions to events, lending their ease of production and graphic intensity to causes large and small. New World Border is comprised of thirty artists from around the U.S. responding to this subject, and their viewpoints serve as jumping off points for discussion and contemplation about this contentious issue. The artists represent a wide cross section of approaches to the printed image, from esteemed Latino Poster Movement artist Malaquias Montoya, to Black Panther Minister of Culture Emory Douglas, Kearny Street Workshop icon Nancy Hom, New York political illustrator Frances Jetter, co-founder of the California Indian Art Movement, Frank LaPena, as well as powerful graffiti artists from the border city of El Paso, WERC and CROL. The show is made of printed multiples including screen prints, linocuts and digital prints. 3 complete sets of prints are touring the country starting in the spring of 2011 visiting any and all destinations interested in showing the works. The exhibition launched at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, California and since then has shown at The Roots Factory in San Diego, Raices Cultural Center in New Brunswick, NJ, the Meridian Gallery in San Francisco, and other shows in New Jersey, Philadephia, San Jose, and Mexico.
January 24, 2012
Contact: Kat Rodriguez: 520.770.1373

Migrant Death Rate on Arizona Border More than Double in Two Years While DHS Plans Expansion of Deadly Criminalization Policies

Arizona- Despite continued claims by the Department of Homeland Security that the number of migrant deaths has reached an all-time low, data show that the actual rate of migrant death on the Arizona border has actually almost doubled in the last two years. This information comes as DHS announces plans to eliminate voluntary removals and criminally prosecute, incarcerate, and formally deport all apprehended immigrants, a move that is clearly spurred by the need to boost detention numbers to justify a grossly bloated DHS budget.

While apprehension numbers do not provide an exact number of immigrants attempting to cross the border, academic research has illustrated that apprehension are highly correlated and fluctuate with true unauthorized migration flows (1). Using the numbers of U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions as a proxy for migration flow, along with the number of human remains recovered on the border, we are able to generate an approximate “migrant death rate.”

As a point of comparison, in 2009, the number of recovered human remains of those believed to be border crossers was 183. The number of apprehensions reported by the Border Patrol in the Tucson sector was 241,673. Thus, it can be said that for every 100,000 apprehensions, there were 75.72 human remains recovered on the Arizona border.

In 2011, the number of recovered human remains of border crossers was also 183. However, reported apprehensions for the Tucson sector dropped dramatically that year, to 123,285. Ultimately, for every 100,000 apprehensions, the remains of 148.43 migrants were recovered; nearly double the rate of 2009.

Since 2000, the remains of more than 2,300 migrants have been recovered on the Arizona, and at least 6,000 border-wide. The continued policies of criminalization of working men and women, coupled with the strategy of funneling migration further into the harsh Arizona desert, has resulted in a human rights crisis that has been denounced by local, national, and international communities.

Claiming credit for the decrease in migration, which is in fact the result of the poor economy, DHS’s plan to dramatically increase the criminalization of migrant workers is irresponsible. Such a policy will ultimately result in forcing more people through non-regularized forms of migration while boosting the budgets of private detention centers such as CCA and contracted companies such as Geo Group, whose budgets depend specifically on the criminalization, detention and deportation of migrants, and who have long been included in the biggest lobbyists for longer and harsher sentencing for immigrants.

The failure of the Obama Administration to acknowledge the impact of deadly border policies and the appalling position of increasing the enforcement regime is reprehensible. In this heated election year, it is particularly insulting to Latino families that political leaders jockey to outdo each other on anti-immigrant and blatantly anti-Mexican rhetoric, while at the same time strategize on how to secure the Latino vote. Democrats and Republicans alike should be advised that this hypocrisy has not gone unnoticed by Latino communities, and they can expect no less than to harvest what the seeds of their xenophobia and racism will yield them.

Currently, the number of remains recovered in Arizona from October through December of 2011 is 45, already exceeding of the number recovered last year during the same timeframe. 82% are currently unidentified. 55% are of unknown gender, meaning that not enough of their bodies were recovered to establish gender. 73% are skeletal remains, a result of the federal border strategy of forcing them into the most isolated and remote areas of the border. While Arizona continues to be viewed as a “battleground state” by political and economic forces, the real battle is being waged around the issue of dignity and justice, with human beings as the casualties of greed and division.

The NEW WORLD BORDER exhibit is currently on view on the main floor of the Ammerman Campus Library of Suffolk County Community College, SUNY (State University of New York). Sitting geographically within minutes of Farmingville and Patchogue, local towns now infamous for hate crimes, this exhibit presents an artistic response to border walls and the fear and tension they perpetuate as far away as Long Island, NY. Sponsored in part by the Latinos del Mundo student club, the exhibit will be on view from December 5, 2011 through January 5, 2012 during library hours.

Arizona State Lawmakers Hope to Build Border Wall with Donations

The $255,000 collected (so far) will barely cover a half mile of fencing.
By John S. Adams, USA TODAY

HELENA, Mont. – Border security or federal land grab?

That question is driving a heated debate over a controversial bill to give the Department of Homeland Security sweeping authority over federal lands within 100 miles of the U. S. border.

The proposed National Security and Federal Lands Protection Act would let the agency waive 36 federal environmental protection laws in the name of better border patrols on public lands.

Students at Shawnee Mission West High School Patrons’ Gallery,...

Students at Shawnee Mission West High School Patrons’ Gallery, Overland Kansas, listen to artist Nicholas Naughton talk about his work.

Artist Nicholas Naughton talks about the New World Border show...

Artist Nicholas Naughton talks about the New World Border show at Shawnee Mission West High School Patrons’ Gallery, Overland Kansas.
